Certified Human™ with a passion for environmentalism, conservation, and the outdoors. I tend to thrive in settings where the human need is clear, the objective matters, and the path forward is still a little shrouded.

I am curious by default. What is it? Why does it exist? How can people better interact with it? As Calvin once put it: “I’m not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.”

I have found, though, that a wide range of information becomes useful when you are trying to understand how people, processes, and systems connect. Most of the time, I have something that connects to something else, and that gives me a place to start.

That curiosity is probably why I keep coming back to systems. We are surrounded by them: social systems, civic institutions, digital products, environmental programs, public processes, and the invisible structures that shape daily life. Some systems invite participation. Others make us a captive audience with no real alternative.

My work is rooted in the belief that understanding a system helps us communicate about it more effectively, and sometimes improve it. Good communication can make a complex system less hostile, more usable, and more trustworthy for the people inside it.

That is the work I care about most: building accessible, usable communication that flattens complexity, creates bridges, and serves the humans within the system. If the people who need to do something cannot understand the path forward, what is the point of the system?

I am at my most effective when I sit at the intersection of “Someone needs to do this” and that someone says, “Great. How do I?”
